General FAQs

What kind of camera do you use?

Does it matter?  I'm not really an equipment loyalist in the sense that I would ever imply that the equipment I use is in some way leads to the quality of the images I produce.   When I create a photograph that fails to meet my standards for composition or quality, it is rarely due to the equipment shortcomings.   And that would be equally true if I were using amateur equipment or very costly professional equipment.  For die-hards who still want to know, go to About the Photographer.

Why do you shoot only B&W?

Mostly just a matter of personal preference.  I think that B&W presents different challenges than color and, while I have experimented with color, I still find B&W images more appealing.  I also prefer to view B&W images when visiting galleries and museums exhibiting the work of others.

Do you do your own darkroom work?

Yes, I do all my own B&W lab work.  On average, I will spend about 45 minutes to 2 hours printing a picture.  If the Photograph is to be exhibited, it will take upwards of 3 hours.  I have spent up to 10 hours on a particular image.

Do you exhibit your work outside the internet?

Some of my photographs have been on display at a local restaurant for years, but I haven't had the time to actively pursue museum submissions or market my images through galleries.  That may change in the coming years as I produce a larger inventory of images of sufficient artistic merit to compete in that realm.

Do you sell your work?

I am only now setting up to sell my images in progressively priced, limited editions.  If you are interested in purchasing a print, please e-mail me for pricing and other information.

Model's FAQs

Can you help me get started in modeling?

I offer nothing that could be expected to get a model started in mainstream modeling.  I no longer have any connections with modeling agencies nor do I do any portfolio shooting.  The only opportunity I offer is to model on a periodic basis for my artistic work.

What age are your models?

The models appearing on my Figurative and Portrait pages are between 19 and 35.  I accept models from 18 to 30 and in rare cases, older.  I do not shoot models under 18.  The women who seem to be attracted most to the project are usually in their mid to late twenties.

Do you use professional models for your current project?

Some of the women I use work as models on a regular basis.   Others have absolutely no professional modeling aspirations, but work with me simply for the enjoyment of producing something artistic.  Each case has it's advantages, but there's something more appealing about working with people who are interested in and have an appreciation for art in general.  Nothing in my work requires professional modeling skills.

Won't appearing in pictures like these affect my job or career?

Only you can answer that.  It may be worth checking with your employer first.  I've worked with housewives, professionals, college students, etc.   To my knowledge, none has yet suffered any repercussions from appearing in my images.  I suspect the reason for that is that the images I produce don't invite condemnation in the way that titillating pinup or pornographic photographs do.   But, if there's a chance you may regret it later, then don't do it.

Is your current project limited only to shooting women?

I never say never, but my interest is primarily in shooting women.   If I were to shoot a male model it would be someone with very powerful or intriguing facial character.  While I've considered using one or two male models, I still haven't gotten around to setting up a shoot.

Why is it so important that models be willing to pose nude?

First of all, not all my images involve nude poses, but since many of my concepts require a nude model, I feel it is important that models understand that requirement.  The selection of subject matter and image concept is a simple matter of choice.  Producing artistic and tasteful images that are appealing to both men and women is a challenge and therein lies the attraction to me.

What if I'd like to work with you, but my boyfriend/husband is opposed to it?

Then don't do it.  If those closest to you aren't supportive, it's not worth the discord that could result in those relationships.

What if my boyfriend/husband thinks it would be great, but I'm not sure?

Then don't do it.  Think about it for a while and see if you become more comfortable with the idea.  Discuss it with friends and get their opinions.  But, ultimately, it's your decision and you shouldn't do it if you don't think you'd enjoy it or may later regret it.

What is a good photograph?

A photograph, regardless of the subject, is only art if the viewer perceives it that way.  A good photograph is one that attracts attention and holds it.  A great photograph is one that's remembered.  An exceptional photograph is one that, when no longer available to look at, is missed.

Most of us find a lot of unappealing art in the world.   But we know when we see something really stunning.  Never mind that we, as artists, often fall short.  The goal should always be to achieve that result.  If I made a list of my top one hundred favorite photographers, I wouldn't be surprised to find my name missing.   But I enjoy it and have the distinct luxury, these days, of shooting solely to satisfy my own taste and ever-rising standards.
